KERB Saturdays: An Ice Cream Adventure

DSC02720As you’ve probably noticed, my blog is called Buy Me Ice Cream. If I made a list of my favourite things, ice cream would be pretty near top and when naming my blog I wanted a way to describe what I love and enjoy – the things that I fall for and want to share, and so Buy Me Ice Cream, i.e. a very good way to win my heart, was born.DSC02706

The above explanation is useful to put my next statement into context. On Saturday afternoon I went to heaven. It was in the form of an ice cream centered food market. On my second wander round the stalls – still in awe – it occurred to me that I needed a strategy: a strategy for trying as much ice cream as possible. After a brief think (it was going to be a lengthy deliberation, but I got impatient) I decided that pacing myself was the only option. So, ladies and gentlemen, place your bets now – how much ice cream could I consume (and savour) in four hours?

DSC02710Now to set the scene a little… KERB, who provide regular street food lunch offerings in Granary Square, King’s Cross, had kindly set the weather to sunny and the atmosphere to jolly. Accompanying the stalls selling some of the best ice cream that London has to offer were savoury food traders boasting Korean burritos from Kimchinary, bountiful burgers from Bill or Beak, and Sri Lanken street food from Kothu to name but a few. There was an array of beautiful smells drifting my way, and did I mention they had a DJ playing ‘sweet’ themed songs?

KERB and the brilliant traders put on a great display of foodie prowess. Although the strong winds did managed to topple an ice lolly cut out, I didn’t see anyone drop an ice cream – so no tears here, only smiles. And I polished off four ice creams – I think having one an hour is quite respectable, and definitely delicious.

Make My Magnum

Today I made and ate my very own Magnum, and if you’re anywhere near London you can have yours too. IMG_20140714_175750

Selfridges latest popup hosts Magnum in celebration of their 25th birthday – and they know how to celebrate in style. Magnum fans will have seen the gold and silver limited editions in supermarkets, but you get that bit more from the magnum experience at Selfridges, which is oh so bespoke.
You choose your ice cream flavour, your type of chocolate, your toppings, and even the colour of Magnum’s signature ‘M’ which is placed on your ice cream delight like the cherry on a cake.

IMG_20140714_175210So what are you waiting for? Oh, yes, you’re in the queue. The inevitable popularity of designing one’s own Magnum, particularly amongst tourists, has resulted in quite a wait for your dessert. After around a fifteen minute delay I started to wonder whether the experience would be a bit like a theme park: queuing for what seems like forever only for the ride to be over in a flash. I feared that it wouldn’t be worth waiting for. But I was wrong. As soon as it was my turn to choose which toppings would adorn my creation, I felt a child-like excitement wash over me.

IMG_20140714_180150I chose crushed meringue, hazelnuts and rose petals as my toppings over a dark chocolate covered vanilla base, and it was divine (even if the rose petals did look more interesting than they tasted). My regression to childhood seemed to continue as I managed not only to get chocolate round my mouth as I devoured the treat, but in single-minded  delight lost track of my sticky, chocolaty hands which proceeded to touch my trousers.

So I made a mess, but overall I loved my ice cream making experience. Next time though I’d be sure to take a friend to make the queuing fun and to tell me where the chocolate is on my face before I get strange looks on the street. And if the mark on my trousers decides to stain I shall just have to think of it as a souvenir of my very own Magnum… and a reminder that until the end of August I can go and get another one.

I’ll be dreaming of ice cream

Sat in La Gelatiera, I wish I could live here. Firstly, their ice cream and sorbets are divine – absolutely amazing. My choice was a cup containing two scoops – one dark chocolate sorbet and the other honey, rosemary and orange zest. The dark chocolate sorbet has a beautiful texture and a deep flavour without bitterness, whilst the honey, rosemary and orange zest has just very subtle hints of the latter ingredient, leaving a fresh rosemary taste partnered excellently with the sweetness and flavour of honey. Delicious.

The shop itself is small for sure, but in a cosy and quirky way. Little wooden stools and benches surround two little tables. Colour is added through painted wood strips in muted reds, pinks and blues. I even like the light fittings. I love the attention to detail put into this fun and petite place.

And I’m not the only one who is taken by the delights on sale here. There has been a constant stream of custom here since I’ve been sat admiring, some of whom were obviously regulars and other baring all the marks of a tourist. This place appears to appeal to all. And I can see why, I would certainly take any excuse to come here again and again. After all, I still have an array of ice cream and sorbet flavours to try, including sour cherry and meringues, matcha and tea, pear sorbet, basil and chilli, and raspberry tart. Not to mention coffees, hot chocolate, milkshake, and a small selection of bakery-esque nibbles including croissants, brownies and macaroons, all of which I can only imagine would also be pretty fantastic. Though for me, it’s the multitude of chilled flavours that I’d look forward to delving into the most.

Free WiFi is available here also, though I think I’d be wary of sitting browsing for too long simply as I wouldn’t want to hog a table, especially if custom here is as regular during the week as it is today, a Saturday. But that isn’t to say I wouldn’t love to sit in this cheerful space all day (and eat ice cream for every meal). Just be sure to bring cash if spending less than £5 if you don’t want to pay a 20p extra card charge. Prices are £3 for one flavour, £4 for two, and £5 for three – worth paying to taste this.

La Gelatiera does take away tubs too, as well as catering. Ice cream birthdays and weddings please! I’ll also be picking up a stamp card on my way out to get my eighth scoop free – yes, I think I probably can wrack up that many. Anyone in my life, be prepared to be dragged here to indulge with me soon!

Oh Heston – if only I had riches to spend on ice cream.

What to turn to when I’m not sure what food I fancy? Ice cream.
I am, without doubt, a bit of an ice cream fanatic.

So when I discovered Heston Blumenthal’s Sage ice cream maker would play an ice cream van tune when the deliciousness inside was ready, I was sold. If only I was as sold on the tune of the price. At £349.99 it’s not really worth the buck – yes, you can choose your preference of ice cream firmness, and yes, you can make sorbet, gelato, frozen yoghurt and ice cream with this machine, and yes, you would jump up and down with a child-like excitement at the sound of your frozen delight being ready to enjoy, but unless you really have cash to splash it probably won’t be a winner for you.
